As a recruiter, you might serve companies in very different standings with the government.  Do you have a sense of how much value the government places on the companies you serve.  Sometimes, it’s counter-intuitive.

For instance, right now oil companies have come under scrutiny recently by President Obama.  They have received special status for a long time.  President Obama called on Congress to stop handing them $4 billion annually in taxpayer subsidies.

“Now, I don’t have a problem with any company or industry being rewarded for their success,” said the President at his weekly address.  “The incentive of healthy profits is what fuels entrepreneurialism and helps drives our economy forward. But I do have a problem with the unwarranted taxpayer subsidies we’ve been handing out to oil and gas companies – to the tune of $4 billion a year. When oil companies are making huge profits and you’re struggling at the pump, and we’re scouring the federal budget for spending we can afford to do without, these tax giveaways aren’t right. They aren’t smart. And we need to end them.”

It might be helpful to check in with other recruiters in your field to consider how the industries you serve are thought of by the American public right now.  What would happen if their services fell out of favor with the government?  Or are there cutting edge technologies that could hamper job growth within your more conventional companies?  While it’s always good to dream about the future, it might be worthwhile to do a little check-in about the relevancy of your industry.  While you’re at it, you can do a tick check.
