LF Staffing Services Agrees to Settlement
A thousand dollars may seem like a lot of taxes to pay or too much to fork over for rent. But is a thousand dollars really that noticeable of a chunk of change for a corporation? Charged with discrimination, LF Staffing Services Inc. was forced to pay $1,100 in civil penalties. Recruiters who are vigilant about enacting just hiring practices may be disturbed by how little employers are fined who try to prevent people from certain backgrounds from working.
LF Staffing Services Inc., located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, faced allegations for engaging in employment discrimination and settled the case with the Justice Department. They were charged with discriminating against certain groups of immigrant workers. Employers chose to improperly pre-screen job applicants. Furthermore, they rejected valid work authorization documents.
The Justice Department found that LF Staffing Services did not permit job applicants to begin the application process unless they were able to present documents sufficient to establish their employment eligibility and further failed to permit at least one individual who presented valid Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) to apply for employment.
Under the terms of the settlement, LF Staffing Services Inc. has agreed to pay the aforementioned $1,100 in civil penalties. It will also have to provide full back pay to the injured party. The Justice Department has also mandated that LF Staffing Services must also train its human resources personnel about what their real responsibilities are when they hire workers.
