Today’s Question: They say an organization can always use more great salespeople. But who else does your company always need to hire ?
The answers below are provided by members of FounderSociety, an invitation-only organization comprised of ambitious startup founders and business owners.
1. People Whose Strengths Complement Your Weaknesses
No company is the same as another, nor is any founder. Being self-aware enough to recognize your own weaknesses as a founder and being confident enough to hire people who are better and smarter than you is difficult. But those hires will do more for your business than you could ever imagine.
All software developers are not created equal. Always be on the lookout for smart technical talent that can help you build and scale your organization. Automating and using the right software to your advantage can help save money through increased efficiency. Good developers are also good problem solvers, and growing organizations always have plenty of problems to solve.
If it is true what many organizations say – that they value making a difference more than being a bottom-line, profit-driven organization – then it stands to reason that hiring a good salesperson will not fulfill this need. If a primary goal of the organization is to make a difference in our economy or world, then we always need to hire people that align with and live by our organization’s core values!
As a growing social media agency, we are always looking for people who are creative and great writers – and who have an understanding of social media. Social media is constantly evolving, so finding people who have a visual eye and can understand the nuances of each platform is important for our business.
Customer outreach is one of the most important areas of an organization, but many businesses seem to forget about it. This is mainly because it is hard to measure in terms of actual ROI. Outreach is important, as you always need to have an active presence if you are going to reach untapped markets.
Software is eating the world. If you depend on software engineers for your business, you should always be on the lookout since the employment market is so competitive. I can’t imagine having more developer resources than I could put to use.
No matter how high-quality your product, you’re eventually going to have to deal with dissatisfaction. How skillfully you handle it could be the difference between gaining a repeat client or damaging the reputation of your brand. Salespeople are usually great at pitching products, but they aren’t necessarily well-suited for customer retention or the returns process.
