The financial industry has been in focus as of late due to the financial crisis and resultant collapse of many major banks and financial institutions. The industry as a whole has shed a huge number of jobs in the past five years. However, this constriction has followed decades of rapid growth. Finance itself, as a product and service, is one of the major products and "exports" of the United States. New financial instruments, rapid capital expansion, financing opportunities, and internationalization have created an ideal climate for innovation in the financial sector. Careers in finance tend to be both well compensated and still in relatively good demand. There is softness in the financial sector due to economic events, however general growth in the sector should continue as finance and insurance become increasingly important products of our society.

Jobs in the financial sector, whether banking, finance, isurance, or brokerage, typically require strong undergrate performance. Although specific majors are not required to enter the profession, typical areas of study include Economics, Math, Statistics, American Studies, and History. Strong quantitive skills are required and most management level positions in finance encourage Masters level work.
